I write to you today not only as a dedicated service member but also as a representative of countless colleagues who silently endure the profound psychological burdens that accompany our commitment to defending our nation. The rigors of military service—prolonged separations from loved ones, the relentless stressors of combat, and the haunting memories of warfare—have left an indelible mark on our mental well-being. Recent data indicates that in 2022, 17.6% of active-duty personnel sought treatment for psychological health concerns, underscoring the pervasive nature of this issue within our ranks.
While the Department of Defense has initiated programs like inTransition to facilitate connections to mental health services, barriers such as stigma, limited access to care, and the unique challenges of military culture continue to impede many from seeking the help they desperately need.
In light of these challenges, I earnestly urge you to consider the following actions:
- Increase Funding for Mental Health Services: Allocate additional resources to expand access to mental health professionals across all military installations, ensuring timely and confidential support for service members.
- Enhance Transition Assistance Programs: Strengthen programs that provide mental health support during the critical transition from active duty to civilian life, recognizing the unique challenges this period presents.
- Promote a Culture of Acceptance: Implement initiatives that destigmatize seeking mental health care within the military, fostering an environment where service members feel empowered to seek assistance without fear of retribution or judgment.
- Support Legislative Measures: Advocate for and pass legislation aimed at improving mental health care for service members, such as the Servicemember Mental Health Support Act, which seeks to enhance access to mental health services within the Department of Defense.
Our nation’s strength is intrinsically linked to the well-being of its defenders. By addressing these critical mental health challenges, we not only honor our commitment to those who serve but also ensure the continued resilience and readiness of our armed forces.
